I can be so indecisive sometimes
For my game asteroid wars I had written my own basic physics engine for the server that knew about acceleration, torque lateral velocity, lateral momentum, angular velocity and angular momentum and did both Axis Aligned and Object Orientated collision using the main quad-tree that everything else used for broad phase. Then I decided that it would be better to use the PhysX library as it should...

Google App Inventor!
Ok have’t posted on here for ages… First thing is that I quite like Googles new app inventor… I know the whole graphical logic builder / code generator approach is not new, infact knowing the amount of work Microsoft have put in to this kind of thing in the past, I wouldn’t put it past them to come up with something similar for their windows 7 phones. Anyway, as it...

Yay I did it.
I walked right around the Island of Guernsey, which was about 45 miles using the cliff paths. Though I walked further than that in total, what with getting lost and walking to and from the bus stops for the start and end of each leg. I might edit this post later on with some links to pictures I took, but for now I just wanted to post that I did it. I had to go all out on the 5th and 6th days to...

My Progress in Guernsey
LoL I lost 7 subs from posting about going on holiday to Guernsey… ok its not technical or development based but… ahh well anyway I am gonna post about it again now anyway. So after day two I just walked 8.75 miles bringing the total upto 15.44 miles, after that my feet were sore so I went to dunk them in the pool but ended up doing 20 lengths and I haven’t gone swimming in...

I am in Guernsey
Well I had a stern word with myself and told me to update my blog more often. Of course I will likely ignore myself and not post again for another month, but one can try… Anyway so I decided to go on a walking holiday and walk around the island of Guernsey for a bit of a get-a-way, so here I am in the hotel on my first night sitting in the bar with my netbook out planning each days walk...

Damm you Tumblr
I just spent the last 4 hours (not kidding) writing out a facinating geneological history of the Bennell Family and just as I press post chrome crashes and loses everything. I log back in and Tumblr is like oh I have an unsaved post for you…. but its BLANK!

MMO RTS - A Competitor
I have just had someone point out another game (in alpha) of a very similar vain, http://www.picaroonthegame.com/  and it looks cool too. My inspiration is more from the VGA Planets side of things though and I am trying to tackle some of the issues from a slightly different perspective from these guys. Reading their blog, it’s a company not just a single guy like me and they are going...

Asteroid Wars - Update
I have been doing a lot of work recently with the core engine for asteroid wars, at present I have a tech demo that supports 8 clients moving around a map with 100,000 moving objects, each object has a position, rotation, velocity and acceleration. Each client sees for a range of about 2,500 units and has on average 1,000 objects on screen, So far so good, all this runs fairly fast. The server is...

Code Name Loadstone (Game Tech Demo)
Spent the last 3 nights creating a luna lander type demo game in Unity… It’s not finished yet but it’s going to be a mars lander game where each level involves you landing near the mars base and delivering something or rescuing base crew… or something like that. Codename… ‘Loadstone’   Picture is the link  - (Note: to restart the game just reload the...

Unity is looking better and better
I looked at it a while back (over a year ago I think), but was deep into rolling my own MMO Engine Tech Demo at the time. (And that was an invaluable learning experience) But now for my current project ‘Asteroid Wars’, I have been back to look at it again and I have to say I am impressed so far, especially when you take into consideration external tools and services like...

It's all a question of scale
I have been thinking more seriously about developing one of my ideas for a game. I was thinking I might be able to kill two birds with one stone as it were… I came across a game development framework called Unity about a year ago and dismissed it as being too much of a game creator type product that only let you drag, drop and script… but It does let you develop for a large range of...

I am Doomed
I found my original Doom II disks at the bottom of an unpacked box the other day and had ago at playing it after like 14 years and it was amazing how fast it all started coming back to me. (See me playing though the first two levels) At first I was like OMG I don’t remember it looking this crap… but after you get into it you forget about what it looks like. (See me playing the first 2 levels) ...

Asteroid Wars
One of the other ideas for a game that has been milling around in my head for a very long time is Asteroid Wars. The basic concept is that large mining and production corporations are just becoming autonomous and akin to mini nation states with many self sustaining colony’s and have recently started warring each other like the tribes of old. Basically its a long winded multiplayer RTS...

My love/hate affair with MMORPGs
My first MMO was Ultima Online when I was 17 and I played that for 4 years off and on, I made lots of great friends and my char was ‘Tren Harkingson’ on the Europa shard (if anyone remembers me) I dabbled with Everquest and Asheron’s Call followed quickly by Dark ages of Camelot, but by this time I knew I was falling out of love with MMO’s. I did put 3 years into Eve...

When I grow up I want to be a...
What did you want to be… Since the the age of about 8 when I found out about computers and computer games I wanted to be a game designer, that then led to basic hobbyist programming and by the age of 12 or 13 I knew I wanted to be a programmer.  And I am… Which is one of the reasons I feel so incredibly lucky in doing what I am doing, the only job I ever really wanted to do. I guess...

Walk with my Dad and his Dog
Google Maps Link Youtube Link Went back to visit my parents this weekend and went out for a walk, only about 4.5 miles but spending some quality time with my Dad and his new Dog… Well it’s my Mums dog really that my Dad didn’t want to get but now loves. Again took some pictures and video with the HTC Desire while using tracks to follow us around the walk, the video is fairly...

I love my Beyerdynamic 770 head phones
I have had them for ages now, but they are brilliant for listing to music really loudly at 23:30 at night. I am driving them from a B-Tech headphone amp and they have loads of bass, I pick up so much more detail when listen with these than my desktop speakers or ear-buds… But what do other people use for listing to music? Having said that the ear-buds that came with my HTC Desire are the...

Pan's Labyrinth
Just finished watching Pan’s Labyrinth, it starts slow, in fact it took me a few days to get around to watching it as I kept starting to watch it and getting bored and distracted. But I am glad I did finish watching it as its really quite good and worth watching. Its hard to talk about much of what I liked about this film without giving away spoilers but I loved the line they walked on,...

Do I want an iPad?
I think I do… I like Apple products they always come up with some great innovative ideas (like the magnetic Ethernet port) and don’t give people a choice to go buy crappy cheaper versions just sell one or two top end versions of a product range which I think is a good thing. The number of people that buy a cheap £400 PC (My Dad) and then moan its slow is unbelievable. What’s...

I now want to create and publish an Android app
But I don’t know what to do yet… There is a lack of games out for the Android compared to the iPhone so I might look at doing a game as they are always more fun to write anyway. Darn, I was just thinking, how about an upgraded version of an old game called Slay, but the original author looks like he has just released an iPhone version. So that would be very bad form to copy his work...
